Good morning! It really is a good morning here — gorgeous weather, birds chirping, Officekitty snoozing, Tax Deductions…I don’t know, doing something that involves neither blood nor broken bones, so there you go. I’m enjoying my first cup of coffee (after an initial struggle to open the new bag of ground beans — scissors may have been involved) and taking a moment to think about the various things coming up that I am looking forward to.
In no particular order…
Testing for my taekwondo advanced brown belt. That’s tomorrow night. For my break, I’ll be doing a running jump off a chair to do a high kick to crush the board. Sounds awesome. I sure hope I don’t die.
Reviewing BREATH page proofs. I recently handed in the copy edits for this fourth and final book in the Riders of the Apocalypse series, and I’m looking forward to doing the proofreading when it’s in galley format when they’re ready. There’s something about reading your work in book format (or book-blueprint format) instead of as a manuscript that really makes it pop as an actual book. That’s because page proofs, like bow ties, are cool. Speaking of which…
Watching season seven of DOCTOR WHO. Yes, yes, yes! Did you folks see the trailer? I never really warmed to Amy, but I loves me that Rory!
Buying LIBRIOMANCER by Jim C. Hines. Jim is one of my favorite fantasy authors. Ever since I first read about a goblin named Jig, I inhaled Jim’s books. His writing is intelligent, engaging, thoughtful, and a heck of a lot of fun. His characters, even the monsters (maybe especially the monsters) are very human, fully developed and awesome to read about. After his goblin series, I devoured his princess series, beginning with The Stepsister Scheme, then The Mermaid’s Madness, Red Hood’s Revenge, and The Snow Queen’s Shadow (all of which you can buy in many places, including the Book Depository), and I loved them all (even when they broke my heart — damn you, Hines!!! **shakes fist** Creating characters that I **care** about!!!)
So it’s no surprise that I’m buying his latest book, Libriomancer, today. The premise is simple: books are magic. No, really. Here’s the synopsis:
Isaac Vainio is a Libriomancer, a member of the secret organization founded five centuries ago by Johannes Gutenberg. Libriomancers are gifted with the ability to magically “reach” into books and draw forth objects. When Isaac is attacked by vampires that “leaked “from the pages of books into our world, he barely manages to escape. To his horror he discovers that vampires have been attacking other magic-users as well, and Gutenberg has been kidnapped. With the help of a motorcycle-riding dryad who packs a pair of oak cudgels, Isaac finds himself hunting the unknown dark power that has been manipulating humans and vampires alike. And his search will uncover dangerous secrets about Libriomancy, Gutenberg, and the history of magic. . . .
Walking to Mordor. This is something that started at Nerd Fitness, and I think I’m in love. When I get to Rivendell, I may splurge for a walking stick JUST BECAUSE. If you get a chance, read Steve’s post “A Hobbit’s Guide to Walking” and think about putting on your walking shoes! Since I started…two weeks ago? Something like that…I’ve walked more than 45 miles. I aim for 2.5 – 5 miles every day. I head out first thing whenever possible, and it’s amazing. I love getting out early and listening to the birds, startling deer and jackrabbits, and noting how some people walk their dogs when they are bike riding (seriously, what’s up with that???). And yes, I know, one supposedly does not simply walk into Mordor. Don’t believe the hype. 😉
Writing a new Jezebel story. Yes, Jezzie will be back! This story will be called “A Chance In Hell,” and it’s a nice bridge story (and standalone) between the Hell on Earth series and the upcoming Pit and Paradise books that I promise I really will write. Really really. No backsies.
Doing an unassisted pullup. I’ve been slowly getting stronger, most recently thanks to joining CrossFit (and actually going!), but I still suck at pullups. I have to use a band to get up to the bar. One of my major goals is being able to do unassisted pullups. It might take a while (read: really, really, really long time), but I will get there!
Watching The Dark Knight Rises. I must be the only person in the world who hasn’t seen this yet. I MUST CHANGE THIS. Ideally, before the movie comes to Netflix…
What are you looking forward to?
