MAGIC IN THE BLOOD is officially in stores today!!
(That is all)
Okay, no, that isn’t all. (Hey, I’m a writer. I’m all about the words. And doing stuff with them. Like origami. Okay, not origami. Novels. I do novel stuff with words.)
When Dame Kaz generously offered her turn to post today to me (be sure to stop in on Monday the 11th, when Dame Kaz will once again have the stage) she suggested I talk about what it feels like to have a second book come out.
It feels like….terror.
Ha-ha. Just kidding. I’ve been writing for years. I’ve sold lots of short stories. I’ve done panels at conventions, read in front of groups, judged contests, critiqued weekly at a table of twenty (or more) tough writers, pitched my books in person to agents and editors, and had at least one angry mob wave my manuscript around and accuse me of being very uncool. I can handle the pressure. I’m comfortable with this job.
So what does it really feel like to have a second book on the shelves? Not terror–that’s silly. It’s more like….it’s kind of…well, there’s….
No. Wait. Terror is pretty much it. Except it’s a good kind of terror. A sort of hopeful fear. I fear I may not have given the readers everything they want. It sounds strange, but even 100,000 words can seem like a short space in which to tell a story. (Thank goodness this is a series!) And at the same time, I am hopeful readers will like what is in the book, and the hints of what is yet to come.
I can’t believe book two is finally out in the world. It’s another chance to see if Allie’s life changes, if she grows, what she will do when she’s pushed to make hard choices, to trust, to fight, to love. And with this second book, I have another chance to share a little magic with readers again. I love that! Knowing someone is reading my book and maybe even likes it is one of the most amazing feelings in the world.
So maybe I was wrong. Terror isn’t the only thing I’m feeling. I’m also feeling very happy to have the opportunity to write novels and to see not one, but two Allie Beckstrom books (so far) actually fall into readers’ hands. I feel….lucky. And incredibly grateful. If you get a chance to read it, if you spend a little time in Allie’s world…thank you.
