So How Are Things With You

I have one week before COLD COPPER, the third book in the Age of Steam steampunk series is due to my editor.

Good news?  I finished writing a very tattered, crappy first draft of the book on Friday.

Bad news?  I have exactly seven days to clean up that crappy first draft and make it shine so my editor’s eyes don’t bleed when she reads it.

Also, if I want to give my long-suffering first readers a chance at it before I ship it off, I need to finish cleaning up the book in, like…three days.

Riiiight.  So, that’s going on.  What else is up in Monkworld?

The last Allie Beckstrom book will be out in less than a month! MAGIC FOR A PRICE hits the shelves on November 6th.  If you’d like to know why this is the last book in the series, check out my blog post here.   I’ve put up an excerpt from the beginning of the book here, and will be posting weekly snippets from the book from now until release date.  The first of those is here.

There.  That pretty much covers the bookish stuff I’m doing at the moment.  So tell me how October is going for you!  Reading any good books?  Trying any new crafty things?  Seen a movie or TV show you like?  I’m currently happy as a clam that HAVEN is back on, and can’t wait for COMMUNITY to start up in a couple weeks.

  1. Wow, Devon, I can’t imagine having a crappy first draft uncrappy enough to polish in seven days. It usually takes me a minimum of four drafts to make a manuscript anywhere near readable. Does this get easier with time, or are you just that awesome?

    • Hi Christina!

According to my first readers, my crappy drafts are getting cleaner and cleaner. I think they’re just being nice to me. :) I don’t usually like to be on this short of a deadline, but that’s is just how the cookie crumbled this time around. Handing in a quickly revised manuscript means I’ll have to put a lot more elbow grease into the final revisions along with my editor’s comments. Same amount of work, just applied at different points in the process.

So, no, I don’t think it gets easier, or that I’m awesome. I’m just on deadline and determined to hit it. :)

  2. I just finished Magic to the Bone, and it was awesome! I’m holding off reading the next one because my TBR pile is huge! Besides that I’m already thinking about NaNoWriMo next month.
Also, love, love, love that Haven is back on, though I missed some of last season I’m still really happy. :D

  3. Thanks for the warning. I avoid snippets like the plague. I like my fun all in one big blast. While I not so patiently await Magic for a Price, I just finished Faith Hunter’s Death’s Rival and it was great. I very highly recommend Riveted by Meljean Brook, super steampunk romance fun!! I have Mortal Ties – Eileen Wilks and Mad River – John Sanford up on deck. I am not a tv watcher but I did finally get around to seeing Cowboys vs Aliens…ugh!

  4. I really like Haven, but have only seen the first season (We didn’t have cable until last year. I know.). My latest TV addiction is Hell on Wheels on AMC. We recorded the first season when they had a marathon and the second season (only 10 episodes, what’s up with that?!) just ended, so my sister and I have actually only been watching it for a couple of months but we love it. And not because Anson Mount is all scruffy and rides a horse…but that doesn’t hurt.

  5. I LOVE that Haven is back on. And The Walking Dead season 3 is THIS SUNDAY!!! WOOT!!!

I can’t wait for the new Allie book.My short story was released August 31st, and it’s still selling really well so I’m super excited about that! Am currently waiting first round edits from my editor for my novella that’s being published in January.

Do release nerves ever go away? Because I’m thrilled my short story is doing so well, but I’m already thinking of January!

  6. I have um… two days to polish up the novella and submit it to Carina Press, since they have submission call out offering feedback on all submissions this week. ( Yes, it will be brief, but I’ll take it). The good news is that I’ll make it. The bad news is that I have a suspicion that I should have revised the novella at a slower pace, fixing some deeper errors. Oh well. At least it is a good writing exercise.

  7. I am finally going to start watching Haven season one! haha… Yeah, I’m behind. But I got the DVD set for a great price and am very curious. It’s based on a Stephen King short story, right??

    Kaz (Dame :))

    • Loosely based on a Stephen King short story, THE COLORADO KID.

I liked the first season, but the series *really* got going (for me) in season 2 and now I’m totally hooked. Hope you like it!!
