Dashing Dame Offers a Giveaway

By Dame Kaz

Okay, so the subject of this post doesn’t mean I’m “dashing” in the way of knights in shining armour. Nope, I am dashing around madly in Real Life and simply have one too many balls to juggle today. But fear not, faithful blog readers! There is a silver lining to this particular cloud… ;)

It’s contest time! I am giving away a pair of cool books. One commenter will get both of these:

promnightsfromhell oncedead

Prom Nights From Hell (which includes the story that introduced Kim Harrison’s YA urban fantasy world) and Once Dead Twice Shy by Kim Harrison – the first book (hardback) in the Madison Avery series. There are, of course, some other great stories in the anthology.

All you need to do is leave a comment telling me what you’ve been reading. Give me some recommendations, you guys know how much I love book recs! :)

The giveaway runs until the end of the day (anywhere) Saturday 4th July 2009 and is open to anyone on the planet, even if you’ve won something here before.

And don’t forget to come back tomorrow when Dame Rachel will be celebrating the release of Prey!

  1. Mikaela says:

I have been splurging on David Gibbins. I love his books. Totally recommended.
What else have I read? Patrica Brigg’s backlist, mainly the Raven Duology. ( Can recommend that too.)

  2. Zombie Joe says:

Latest books have been Deader Still by Anton Strout, Blood Groove by Alex Bledsoe and Road Trip of the Living Dead by Mark Henry.

Alex Bledsoe is a local (to me) author and it is a vampire story set in 1975 Memphis. Lots of race/class relations type stuff in it. Very solid read.

Deader Still was very interesting and had lots of action, magic and developing characters. Also there were more zombies in this one that the first one – that is always a plus.

Road Trip I am still working on, but I am liking it so far. A nice change from the more common police procedural that much of urban fantasy seems to be.

  3. Rob Charron says:

    Hi :)
    Thanks for this great contest.
I’ve been reading MARK OF THE DEMON by Diana Rowland and it a great book so far. and I love the main character, Kara.
    Love From Canada
    xoxo

  4. Meaghan says:

I’ve just recently finished my TBR pile and since I’m low on funds right now, I’ve raided my grandmother’s library. Going through a few of the clasics, I just finished A Tale of Two Cities (amazing) and am now immersed in the world of Dorian Gray.

  5. Tina Christopher says:

Slow down, honey, we don’t want you to collapse!

I’m currently reading Prey by Rachel Vincent and she’s pretty much giving me one heart attack after the other;D. Great writing and story! Only problem is that I’m worried how it’s going to end. Well, nothing to do but keep on reading.

    Also great reads
Charlaine Harris, An Ice Cold Grave
Lora Leigh, Nauti Intentions (a little spicy)
    Tamora Pierce, Bloodhound
    Amanda Quick, Third Circle (historical)
Lisa Shearin, Trouble with Demons (brilliant)

  6. Chris says:

I read Beth Kery’s Daring Time over the weekend and really enjoyed it, even though time travel romances aren’t a favorite.

  7. Dan says:

I just finished Sarah Cross’ DULL BOY. I highly recommend it. It has teenage superheroes.

  8. Amy says:

Of the books I’ve read recently, I’d recommend ‘Black Magic Woman’ by Justin Gustainis, a great detective dark fantasy kinda thing. A lot like the Dresden Files I think, although I’ve never read any of those.

And for something completely different, I’m really enjoying anything by Alastair Reynolds right now. It’s hard SF, but seems to appeal to the fantasy-lover in me anyway.

  9. Carolyn H says:

I am currently reading Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews. I had read the first 2 kate Daniels books before but since its been almost a year. I need to re-read the books before I start on the lastest one Magic Stikes. Next on the list is going to be Toni Andrews books. I finally found Beg for mercy so I can read the series.

  10. Irene says:

What I’ve been reading? Oh dear, this might get complicated. Ever find yourself in one of those situations when you’re WAAAY too busy to read, but the books just kinda pile on you, and then when you have a spare moment you read a little bit, start a new book, even though you’ve already started another one but can’t find it? Well, I’m in this situation, so at the moment I’m reading ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns (so good but so sad), ‘Moon called’, ‘Claimed by Shadow’, ‘Night Shift’ (by Dame Lili), ‘Working for the devil’ (also by Dame Lili), then another book called ‘Night Shift’ (this one by Nora Roberts) and ‘Ink exchange’. So yes, I’m very busy and I can’t believe I started all those books, either.

  11. Margay says:

I just finished reading Fire Me by Libby Malin, which was a quick, fun read. I am now reading The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane, just started the House of Night series, What Would Jane Austen Do? and Very Valentine (I read a lot of different books at once, depending on my mood – or the room I’m in).
    Margay

  12. Lisa B. says:

I’ve been reading Dame Keri’s Deadly Desire and the second installment in the Sookie Stackhouse Novels, Living Dead in Dallas. I would highly recommend either (especially if you’re a True Blood fan, seeing as the novels are ALWAYS better than their screen versions).

  13. Melissa says:

I’ve been trying to get my hands on a copy of Prom Dates From Hell forEVER!

Recently, I’ve finished (and would recommend) Jacqueline Carey’s Naamah’s Kiss, Brandon Sanderson’s Warbreaker, Simon R Green’s The Nightingale’s Lament, TA Pratt’s Dead Reign, and I’m about to start on Diana Rowland’s Mark of the Demon. That’s all in the last couple of weeks – I’m sort of an insatiable reader. :)

  14. EmmaD says:

I’ve just gone through the weather warden series of Rachel Caines and loved it :)
Also just read the first three Nocturne City books of Caitlin Kittredge’s and liked these as well.

  15. robin says:

I finally got mostly caught up on my middle grade books — fortunately, they were darn good :) BRILLIANT FALL OF GIANNA Z, by Kate Messner; WINNIE’S WAR, by Jenny Moss; and PARIS PAN TAKES THE DARE, by Cynthea Liu.

  16. Oh those books are on my wish list. I love Kim Harrison’s books.

I have been trying to read Skin Trade by LKH. I’ve been so busy trying to get painting done around the house, work, family etc I am just having trouble finding time to read it. It’s not bad at all but I am only have to read 30 min to an hr here and there. I hope to finish it tonight or tomorrow night.

  17. Dottie says:

    Hi Kaz!

I’m reading Faeries Gone Wild and The Highwayman, they’re both fantastic! Faeries Gone Wild is a sweet set of stories about the faery realm intruding into the mortal realm. The Highwayman by Michele Hauf is dark and delicious. Just starting it, but I’m already loving it.

    Dottie :)

  18. Linda George says:

I just started Kate Elliott’s Spirit Gate, it has been in my TBR pile awhile. It is great! can hardly stand to put it down. I love her books. I just finished Unknown, by Rachael Caine, a really good read. All these other authors are behind Kim Harrison of course.

  19. Silver James says:

I’ve been reading dark suspense and highly recommend Leslie Kelly-Parrish’s Black CAT series, FADE TO BLACK (out now), PITCH BLACK (out first of August), and BLACK AT HEART (out first of September).

I’ve just started reading Toni McGee Causey’s CHARMED AND DANGEROUS. It’s hysterical. Also on the horizon in Terri Garey’s YOU’RE THE ONE THAT I HAUNT. I’d read it for nothing else but the title.

  20. Chris says:

I’m on book 4, The Shadow Rising, of “The Wheel of Time” series by Robert Jordan. I plan on reading all the ones in the series that are out. So far I can find no complaints in any of the books so far. Jordan has built an incredible world.

  21. Jody F. says:

I’m currently finishing up Shelley Bradley’s STRIP SEARCH and enjoying the steaminess. Will then start Brenda Joyce’s DARK VICTORY. I’ve loved this series and am looking forward to reading Ian’s story!

  22. Karen W. says:

I recently finished TEKGRRL by A.J. Menden (follow-up to PHENOMENAL GIRL), and it was really fun. I’m reading SALT & SILVER by Anna Katherine now, and so far, so good. :)

  23. Linda D. says:

I recently finished “Duma Key” by Stephen King…it was very good! But then again, most of his stuff is very good. ;)

  24. Sara M says:

I just finished Mark of the Demon by Diana Rowland and it was amazing. Other recent reads are Succubus Heat by Richelle Mead and Some Girls Bite by Chloe Neill.

And right now, I’m reading Kitty Raises Hell by Carrie Vaughn.

  25. Wendy says:

I just finished reading the Must Love Hellhounds anthology, and the 4 stories are great! There’s two that I just loved, but I really enjoyed the whole book, which is a little surprising because before I wasn’t a big fan of anthologies. Next I’m hitting Strange Brew – another anthology!! :D

  26. Katherine says:

Most recently I read Richelle Mead’s Succubus Heat, Caitlin Kittredge’s Street Magic, Dame Devon’s Magic in the Blood. All of which were great!

Now I’m rereading Jocelynn Drake’s Nightwalker before getting to the sequel Dayhunter so I can read the arc of her third, Dawnbreaker, that I got my hands on. I hate reading series out of order, and I need a refresher on her first book, so reading all three back to back should make for a good holiday weekend.

  27. Tasha says:

I’m currently reading Tate Hallaway’s Tall,Dark and Dead series. It’s great.
I recommend Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series. It’s one of my favorite. Also, Jocelynn Drake’s Dark Days series is awesome. Check out Sharon Ashwood’s new series also! :)

  28. Since i’ve been stuck at home for the past week and a half, I’ve gotten a lot of reading done. I just finished Ballads of Suburbia by Stephanie Kuehnert. Amazing and thought provoking book! Wow. I’m currently reading Dead and Gone by Charlaine Harris. One of these days, I’ll read the second book in the series and figure out what the heck is going on in True Blood this season! Also, read Prey by Rachel Vincent. Awesome book!

  29. Savannah Philips says:

I’ve been reading ‘The Summoning’ and ‘The Awakening’ by Kelley Armstrong. They’re both really good.
It was the whole ‘raising zombies’ thing that got me interested.
I’ve also been reading large amounts of Fanfiction, like ‘Heroes of Spira’ by Fayte and a lot of Nagia’s work. Her ‘Burnt Offerings’ is really good, as is Enkida’s ‘Memento Vivere’
    http://www.fanfiction.net/u/92501/Nagia

  30. Angela T. says:

I recently read Blood From Stone by Laura Anne Gilman. It’s the latest in a great urban fantasy series set in New York.

  31. Megan says:

Oooh fun! I’ve been reading though the Hugo Nominees – most recently the fabulously amusing “Pride and Prometheus” trying to get everything read for the voting deadline this Friday.

  32. Jeanie R says:

I just finished Rachel Vincent’s Prey. It was the best yet. I didn’t throw this one across the room in frustration when it ended, like I did Pride. Prey leads into the next book, but it left me in a comfortable place and satisfied at the end. I can’t wait to get a copy of it for one of my good friends at RWA Nationals. Me, I couldn’t wait the extra 2 weeks. I’m weak, but boy was it worth it.

  33. catie james says:

Right now I’m reading three books: BEYOND HEAVING BOSOMS by Sarah Wendell and Candy Tan (aka, the Smart Bitches), A VOICE OF HER OWN: BECOMING EMILY DICKINSON by Barbara Dana, and THE MYSTERY OF GRACE by Charles de Lint.

  34. Cybercliper says:

I just finished these and highly recommend them as great reads:

    The Magic Knot/Helen Scott Taylor
    Immortal Warrior/Lisa Hendrix
    My Forbidden Desire/Carolyn Jewel
    Tiger Eye/Marjorie M. Liu

  35. Tez Miller says:

Just because I read something, doesn’t mean I recommend it ;-) Have been reading the original prequel tie-in novels of “Alias”. No, I don’t know why, either; I never even saw the show. And “American Dad” is my CIA TV show of choice ;-)

  36. Riva Laughlin says:

I just finished “Bad to the Bone” by Jeri Smith Ready. Highly recommended! Now I’m reading “The Strain” by del Toro. Also highly recommended.

  37. Firewolf says:

I’ve been reading Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub. It’s good.

  38. Chris says:

I’ve been reading Victoria Dahl…Talk Me Down and her historicals. I also just finished Kristan Higgins’s Fools Rush In…a great read when you need a laugh.

  39. I’ve just finished Seduce the Darkness by Gena Showalter and it was really good – my first Showalter book too! Skinwalker by Faith Hunter comes out next week and it’s great. I’m working on the Huntress anthology now. I’ve only read Caitlin Kittredge’s short in there so far, but it has me intrigued and ready to start Street Magic ASAP.

  40. Jackie P says:

k, so I just finished Eternal Craving by Nina Bangs, interesting take on the 2012 mythology; am looking for a copy of City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare, bk 2 of the Mortal Instruments series, a new take on the good vs evil eternal battle etc for YA that was very good. Also loving anything Lora Leigh, Allyson James, Kim Harrison (of course)and I could go on and on. Really enjoying the House of Night series by PC and Kristen Cast, as well as (for something a little different) the Obernewtyn books by Isobelle Carmody. I will stop now! (Ok, I won’t but I’ll just continue quietly on my own)

  41. Caitlin says:

Woot, I’ve been reading Wolfwalker by Tara Harper. its older but still makes me wish there were true Wolfwalkers.

  42. Liana Brooks says:

    Oh! I love Kim Harrison!

Right now I’m juggling a couple of good reads. A few are unpublished pieces I’m critiquing for friends.

Another is GUD4 that I’m reading for the GUD Reading Challenge (http://lianabrooks.blogspot.com/2009/06/gud-readng-challenge-kick-off.html)- very entertaining. Go grab a copy :o )

And then I’m rereading Young Miles by Bujold. I love her writing style! The characters are a lot of fun and it’s one of the few sci-fi books where the MC isn’t isolated to force them to grow. Quite the opposite, actually. It’s a fun read and I recommend the whole Vorkosigan Saga.

  43. Pamk says:

I just finished wicked game and bad to the bone by Jeri Smith-Ready. Was a very different story adn completely unusal take on vamps.

  44. Candace says:

Ugh today I’ve been reading psych articles from various journals all about deception and nonverbal communication. But what I’m REALLY looking forward to, which I would’ve gotten today if I didn’t have this paper to write, is City of Souls by Vicki Pettersson.

Last week I read Finger Lickin’ Fifteen by Janet Evanovich and Prey by Rachel Vincent- managed to find an early copy of that one at Borders. I almost jumped out of my skin, I was so excited!!

  45. Jackie U says:

Highlights (because I’m feeling frisky and want to go play!):

Salt and Silver by Anna Katherine: if Neil Gaiman wrote chick lit, this would be it. Fabulous!

Prey by Rachel Vincent: the best book in the series! It’s funny, sad, and highlights the growth of ALL the characters. And yes, I’m still on Team Jace. : )

Playing with Fire by Gena Showalter: second time through and it’s still one of my favorite books ever. Rome Masters…*drool* It’s action adventure/romance without being cheesy! Except for Tanner…he was hilariously cheesy!

  46. Katee R says:

Right this second I’m rereading (for probably the third or fourth time) Kushiel’s Dart by Jacqueline Carey. She’s one of my favorite authors of all time and reading her is like comfort food for me (hence the multiple rereadings).

Next up is Fellowship of the Ring (I know, shoot me now because I’ve never read any Tolkien except for The Hobbit).

  47. I am currently in the middle of the Blood Ties series but itching to get back to YA!

  48. Astres says:

I actually just read Dante’s THE DESCENT INTO HELL as a break between Phillip Pullman’s THE SUBTLE KNIFE and THE AMBER SPYGLASS (which I’ll be starting…tomorrow, I think).

  49. Stephanie says:

Love to get my hands on those books! :)

I’ve been re-reading “The Cat Who…” books by Lillian Jackson Braun. They’re nice escapist well written “peanut” books (you can’t just read one!).

  50. Rhianna says:

It came out in March but I am just now getting around to reading NICE GIRLS DON’T HAVE FANGS by Molly Harper. I’m a bit of a slow reader normally and tend to prefer darker stuff but it’s summer and something funny sounded perfect so I picked it up last night and I’m almost halfway done already! LOVE it! It’s about a librarian who loses her job and ends up having a lot of really bad luck that winds up with her being turned into a vampire. The second book comes out in August so I can’t wait.

  51. Jacqueline L. says:

I’ll recommend two books I’ve recently read, both YA novels by L.A. Meyer, books 4 and 5 in his Bloody Jack series. I seriously love that series.

#4 – Mississippi Jack: Being an Account of the Further Waterborne Adventures of Jacky Faber, Midshipman, Fine Lady, and the Lily of the West

#5 – My Bonny Light Horseman: Being an Account Of the Further Adventures Of Jacky Faber, in Love and War

  52. Dan says:

Oh, you know I have to jump in on this contest :)
I’ve been listening to Pride and enjoying it. Just finished Succubus Heat by Richelle Mead, it was very good. And before that finally picked up the first omnibus edition of Phil and Kaja Foglio’s Girl Genius, which is a lot of fun.

  53. Soleil Noir says:

Once again, bless you dames for your opening your contests to everyone. :) Love Kim Harrison’s books and have been dying to try Once Dead, Twice Shy.

I’m currently reading The Eight by Katherine Neville. So far, so good! And finished Heart Sick by Chelsea Cain not long ago. Also a good read, if you’re into the mystery/serial killer fare.

  54. Faust says:

Daniel Waters Kiss of Life, Muffin by Mahsa, and Evenfall by Sonny and Ais.

  55. Danette says:

I’ve been reading a book from my TBR pile,Fairyville by Emma Holly-it’s a very steamy and twisty book.

    Happy book hunting :)

    Hugs, Danette

  56. nicole b says:

Before bed book: Wraith by Phaedra Weldon.
    I would definitely recommend this!

Purse book: Heart of Stone by CE Murphy
Four words: gargoyles in Central Park. *thumbs up!*

Car audio book: Fearless by Diana Palmer.
Okay..usually I like Palmer’s books, but lately I find myself wanting to do a “head2wall” because her heroines act like they’ve had a big glass of “doormat juice”.

I’m almost finished with the purse book and then I’m moving onto One Dark Night by Jaid Black.
It sounds very promising about a woman in a internet relationship and the man ends up being a serial killer/stalker.

    Hope I helped,
    Nicole

  57. brenda helgeson says:

i just read columbine, which i had to take a deep breath before reading, not knowing if i wanted to back there or not, but the author did his homework and crated a riveting, couldn’t put down, page turner

  58. Llehn says:

I’ve been reading Hunger Games – Suzanne Collins.

  59. Naomi says:

Just finished Chosen, the third House of Night book by PC and Kristen Cast, which was gloriously silly if nothing else… I’m looking forward to getting my claws into Caitlin Kittredge’s Street Magic, which just arrived yesterday :)

  60. Mardel says:

    Hello!

I’ve been reading Lilith Saintcrow’s The Demon’s Librarian,(pretty good, a little different from her other two urban fantasy series), Devon Monk’s Magic in the Blood, (great), Green Angel (YA by Alice Hoffman, wonderful book), and Prey by Rachel Vincent (also a good read).

Coming up is Mark of the Demon (Diana Rowland), Moon Burn (Alisa Sheckley) and Darkness Calls (Marjorie M. Liu).

Since at least three of those books are written by your blog-mates, I’m sure you’ve already read them. :) New to me (never read anything by her) is Diana Rowland

Two other books that I’m dying to get, but haven’t been able to yet, is Skinwalker by Faith Hunter and The Sweet Scent of Blood by Suzanned McLeod.

  61. Belinda says:

I’ve been reading I Hate People. Thanks!

  62. Emma says:

Just finished an anthology – Weddings from hell, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Before that it was the 2 Nadia Stafford books from Kelley Armstrong. Not paranormal but very, very good I thought.

Now dabbling into another anthology, that really isn’t meant to be read by anyone embarassed by full descriptive sex scences…A Red Hot Valentines Day, what can I say, I’m A hopeless romantic, with a love of UF

    God help me!

  63. Alis says:

Well I’m reading a Interred with their bones by Jennifer Lee Carrell. It was gift for my 18th birthday. Actually it is first time that friend of mine bought me a book all I usually get is jewellery.

    Synopsis:
“A feverishly paced action adventure” (The New York Times) about a long-lost Shakespeare work and a killer who reenacts the Bard’s most bloody murders

Jennifer Lee Carrell’s highly acclaimed debut novel is a brilliant, breathlessly paced literary adventure. The action begins on the eve of the Globe’s production of Hamlet when Shakespeare scholar and theater director Kate Stanley’s eccentric mentor Rosalind Howard gives her a mysterious box, claiming to have made a groundbreaking discovery. Before she can reveal it to Kate, the Globe is burned to the ground and Roz is found dead…murdered precisely in the manner of Hamlet’s father.

  64. Vic says:

I’m currently on the Iron Hunt by Marjorie M Liu which I’m very curious to see how pans out.
I’ve just finished Fragile Eternity by Melissa Marr – an absolutely amazing series which I’d recommend to anyone.

  65. Jessica says:

Well after my anxious wait for Prey which I devoured in 2 days while having to work, I recently picked up the Vampire Academy series. I am currently reading Frostbite and it is pretty good. My TBR pile contains Shadow Kiss, City of Souls, and Dying Bites. With a few more on the way next week!

  66. Gale says:

Recent reads…all good: Wicked Prey by John Sandford, The Scarecrow by Michael Connelly, Finger Lickin’ Fifteen by Janet Evanovich. I’m currently reading Lisa Gardner’s The Neighbor; I love her books.

  67. KMont says:

Lately I’m reading a Hoyt historical romance, To Seduce a Sinner, and it’s kind of nice to be getting back into that genre. I’m also desperately trying to reach the end of the first Noble Dead saga by Barb and J.C. Hendee. This series has just consumed me. I have got to find out everything. Now!

I’ve been pining for both the books in this giveaway. Thanks for the opportunity to win them!

  74. Teresa W. says:

I’m on book 5 in The Morganville Vampire series by Rachel Caine, loving them!

  75. music_lover3 says:

I just got done reading Kim Harrison’s latest Hollows books and it was great! I also read Brisingr by Christopher Paolini, which was pretty good. It was way better than the second one. Right now, I’m reading Midnight Never Come by Marie Brennan and it’s pretty good so far. It’s different from what I normally read nowadays, but it’s pretty good.

  76. drey says:

Um… I’ve just read Charlaine Harris’ Dead and Gone, Kelley Armstrong’s The Summoning, C.E. Murphy’s The Pretender’s Crown, Elin Hildebrand’s The Castaways and Ilona Andrews’ Magic Strikes. Phew. =)

  77. Heather C says:

I just finished Amber Benson’s Death’s Daughter, which was a great read. I am currently reading Angie Fox’s Accidental Demon Slayer. I would definitely recommend it, how can you go wrong with a talking dog and granny biker witches. :) I love Kim Harrison’s work!!!

  78. ~Crimson says:

I just finished Seven Tears Into the Sea, a new (to me, anyway), very mysterious book about Selkies. It was great.

I’ve also been following the Charlaine Harris series about Sookie Stackhouse (even before Trueblood was on tv!).

Pretty much any Robin McKinley book is good, if you’re looking for something magical.

The Kelley Armstrong dark powers trilogy is good, too. YA Paranormal.

That’s what I recommend, off the top of my head :)

  79. Angela says:

Just finished Devon Monk’s Magic in the Bone and can highly recommend it, in fact I’ve put it in the feature bay at work. Also just finished a proof for Charlie Higson’s first book in a new young adult series due out in September called The Enemy, an interesting take on zombies, one to watch for if you enjoy ya books or have a teenager.
Finally, I am currently reading Lili St Crow’s Strange Angels not too far into it yet but already Dru rocks great character, can’t wait to get back to it.

  80. Jason says:

I am currently reading “The Terror” by Dan Simmons. I am liking it so far. These both look awesome. thanks for the chance

    jason(at)allworldautomotive(dot)com

  81. Sam says:

Reading? Well, at the moment I’m reading a bunch of different books. One is an autobiography called ‘Abandoned’, don’t read this if you don’t like sad life stories. It’s about a kid who was abused when she was little. But on a happier tone, I’m also reading ‘Rising Sun’, ‘The awakening’ by Kelly Armstrong and ‘Fragile Enternity’ by Melissa Marr. Also I’ve just finished reading ‘One more Bite’ by Jennifer Rardin, and I would highly recommend Jeniffer Rardin’s Jaz Parks series.

  82. Wow! What an amazing response. Thanks everyone for your recs – I am reading through them at the moment. :)

There’s still plenty of time to enter, and Dame Rachel has another awesome contest in the next post.

    Cheers,
