The older I get, the faster time seems to move. This first year of Damedom is no exception. I can’t believe it’s been a year already. Yet, it also seems like I’ve known my fellow Dames forever.
I feel kind of the same way about publishing. I can’t believe it’s already been two and a half years since my first release, yet it also feels like I’ve been doing this all my life. I can hardly remember what my life was like before deadlines and releases. That other, pre-publishing me feels more like an acquaintance than a memory.
Writing will take over your life, if you let it. I readily admit that it’s taken over mine. And I could not be happier about that. At this point, I can’t imagine going back to a job in which I can’t make up my own schedule, make up my own people, and cause serious chaos on a daily basis. I kind of thrive on this.
I kind of love it.
So, since I love my job, and I love being a Dame, let’s combine the two, in honor of the Damiversary.

“Why don’t you take a nap?” I suggested, reaching back to squeeze Marc’s hand as he yawned again. “We’ll wake you up when we get to the airport.”
Marc started to refuse; I could see the frown building. But then he gave up and sighed. “Can you make sure smart-ass keeps us on the road, somewhere below ninety miles an hour?”
I only nodded and smiled, refraining from telling Marc that Jace was actually the better driver. Behind the wheel, Marc made The Fast and the Furious look like Driving Miss Daisy.
He looked unconvinced, but ten minutes later, I heard him snoring and looked back to find him passed out against the window, using an empty backpack for a pillow.
“So, how come you’re not falling asleep at the wheel?” I whispered, to keep from waking Marc. Normally he was a very sound sleeper, but I had no doubt that if he was ever going to wake without warning, it would be during a private conversation between me and Jace.
“He drove most of the way to New Mexico.” Jace’s gaze flicked to the rearview mirror.
“And you could sleep through that?”
Jace shrugged. “I figure if he’s planning to kill me, he’ll wait until he has enough justification to avoid the death penalty.” He was still smiling, but his eyes showed no humor. “So…how long do you think that’ll be?”
My hands went cold in spite of the heater blowing full blast, and I twisted to look at Marc again, to reassure myself that he really was sleeping. “Jace, I can’t do this right now.” My words came out so soft I could barely hear them, yet they left a bitter taste on my tongue.
“Just give me a date,” he whispered, sounding oddly…intense. “And I won’t mention it again until then.”
“You want to know when I’m going to tell him? You’re seriously asking me this now?” No amount of cautious whisper could soften my irritation. Marc was in the back seat!
“You think there’ll be a better time?” Jace returned calmly, staring straight at the road. “There will never be a good time to talk about this, Faythe. We’re about to sneak into enemy territory, and as mad as it makes me that Calvin Malone owns everything that was once my father’s–” his wife, as well as the land “–it pisses Cal off worse to know my dad had it all first. He hates me for that, and if he finds us, he’ll kill me. And this may be petty of me, but I’d kind of like to know where we stand before I die, if that’s what’s in the cards.”
I sucked in a deep breath and held it, and when that wasn’t enough, I let it go slowly and pulled in one more. Jace wasn’t looking at me. He couldn’t. Or maybe he wouldn’t. I wasn’t being fair to either of them, and I damn well knew it. What I didn’t know was how to remedy that without hurting someone. Or—more likely—all of us.
In that moment, with Marc snoring softly behind us, and Jace staring at the road like nothing else existed while he waited for my reply, I wished I’d never let him kiss me. That I’d never kissed him back. I wished we’d been strong enough to deal with Ethan’s death without falling into each other physically. If I’d never known what I was missing, surely this wouldn’t be so hard.
But that was a futile wish, worth less than every penny I’d wasted on fountains as a child. And even if I could undo what I’d done, I wasn’t convinced it would make any difference.
I didn’t feel something for Jace simply because I slept with him. The truth was that I slept with him because I felt something for him. Even if we’d had the willpower to resist physical comfort in such emotionally fragile states, I would still feel something for Jace. And eventually something else would happen to weaken our willpower, and the result would be the same.
Only it would be infinitely worse if it had happened after I’d married Marc.
“Faythe?” Jace practically breathed my name, and I heard the filament-thin edge of panic in his voice. He couldn’t interpret my silence and had automatically assumed the worst-case scenario. “What are you thinking?”
I sighed, a fragile sound that was little more than the slide of air between my lips. “I’m thinking that I have no idea what I’m doing.”
“That makes two of us.”
I glanced at him in surprise, and he shot me a grin that was almost…shy. “What, you think I planned this?” I shrugged helplessly, and he turned back to the road. “I like my teeth in my mouth and my face intact, thank you. I know what this means for me, and I know what it means for Marc. And I know what it means for the Pride.”
“Jace…” I started, but he shook his head.
“Let me finish.”
After a second of silence, I nodded hesitantly.
“If I love you more than you love me, I’m as good as dead. Yet I can’t make myself take it back. I can’t just walk away from you, because every time you pass by me without smiling, without touching my hand, or at least making eye contact, it feels like I’m dying inside. And I’m pretty sure that hurts worse than whatever Marc would do to me. Whatever your dad would do.
“Hell, Faythe, I’m pretty sure that never touching you again would hurt worse than the nastiest death Calvin could think up for me.”

Read them all so not a spoiler here. I cannot wait for Shift to hit the shelves. I was at a book signing last night for a completely different genre and I started to talk to the person behind me in line and what we read and like. I mentioned your name and she had just finished the all your books and loved them as much as I had. She is a teacher and she YA books are brought to her attention everyday by her students. She did not know of your MST series. That is going to be her next adventure. Everyone loves your books, so keep them coming!!

All Right. I admit it. It was so good, I had to come back over an hour later and reread it. Jace is just dying there and Faythe has no clue what to do. She loves them both. Part of me wishes she could have them both and be leader of not only her pride, but all of the prides in the area. She is strong, she could handle it. Then I think, that there is no way that any of the men in her life would let her have it that way. That Jace and Marc would both self destruct before that could happen. Let alone what her father would do.
This is not a series that I have gotten into yet. I would love the opportunity to win the series and read it.

I just finished the Soul Screamer books, I didn’t think I was going to like as much as the Shift series but you did it again. I’m hooked and so is my 11 yr old son! Too bad he can’t read the Shift series yet, I’ve told him about it and loves it.

Oddly enough, I don’t actually know who I want Faythe to choose. I started off the series as a complete Jace fan, but now…I don’t know.

i love the series and i even got a coworker into the series and now both of us are waiting on pin and needles for shift to hit the shelves. on the relationship between faythe and jace i am torn for some reason i am relating to marc. i dont want to see him hurt. i kept seeing your series in the stores and so one day i wrote your name down and looked you up online and the book. it sounded good to me so i went in search of the first book and have enjoyed them all ever since. they always leave me on the edge of my seat and cant wait for the next one. i just want to thank you for your books and for reminding me how enjoyable book can be.

I loved this little sneak peak. My math teacher got me hooked to the series. But this thing between Faith,Jace,and Marc is really breaking my heart. Everyone seems to be on team Jace but I am so routing for team Marc. But in a way I don’t want Faith with Marc because she doesn’t appreciate him. She’s always walking all over him. Her and Jace shiould go on and be selfish and get together. Because of what they’ve done it can’t get any worse. This excert had my heart racing with anticipation. (Genious just genious)

In my opinion, Faythe doesn’t deserve either of them until she grows up. Love the Shifter books, but if Rachel wasn’t such a skilled writer I would probably have stopped the series by now, because Faythe is a heroine just TSTL for me. I’m surprised I didn’t dent my wall when I threw “Prey” against the wall when Faythe slept with Jace.

Love this series, Rachel, and can’t wait to read Shift. I have a soft spot for Jace, and his storyline hurts my heart.
I love the Shifter series, Faythe is such a great kick ass heroine. I personally want her with Marc, but see how Jace could be attractive. I think as strong as she is Marc is what she needs to help her eventually run the Pride.

I picked up Stray in ’07 about two months after it had been published. I’ve been hooked ever since. The wait has been killing me, but with each book, I fall in love more. Prey had me on the edge of my seat, I was so worried about Marc, and Ethan’s death absolutely destoryed me. I can’t wait to find out what happens to the South Central in Shift. It’s going to be a long two week wait. Fingers Crossed for a Faythe-Marc ending.
